Kaffir lime plants & fresh leaves

and keep for future reference.

Background: From South East Asia and grown mostly in Florida and California in the USA. Highly sought after mostly for the leaves used in Asian cuisine.  The fruit is used extensively in the preparation and manufacture of Thai curries.  Plants can live for 15 - 20 years.

Phensri has one of the largest home-grown supply of organically grown plants in this area. Plants are quarantined in States like Florida & California and not allowed to be transported out! But you can get your plants and Kaffir Lime leaves from Phensri if you are in the NJ/NY/PA area.  Phensri will ship her freshly picked leaves anywhere and you will get them within two business days!

For maximum flavor and potency use only freshly picked leaves.  As necessary you can freeze what you don't use immediately and use them straight from the freezer to your pot!  Avoid powdered or dried leaves - the flavor would have long departed.

Care

Easy to care. Plants are started in perfect soil. Containers MUST have good drainage. They are very tough, hardy and adaptable and migrate back and forth from inside to outdoors  without fuss. Keep your plant pot slightly moist but do not overwater.  Plants enjoy a misty water spray every now and then. Use pots with good drainage (4 holes plus) and use a saucer underneath when indoors.

In early summer first new shoots with a brown/purple signals renewed growth. Small plants will double their size in the summer. Fertilize with nitrogen rich organic fertilizer only every 6 weeks during the summer. Pick you leaves for your favorite Thai cuisine from the stem base they will grow back quickly.  They love the hot sunny areas outside.  Just remember to keep the soil lightly moist AND NEVER OVER WATER TO THE EXTENT WATER IN TRAPPED IN THE POT FOR DAYS. ROOTS WILL ROT.

You have to get your plant indoors before FROST! Watch the weather reports for any indication the overnight temp will get to 40 (to be safe). Mist the leaves and wait for them to dry out before migrating inside. Plants don't need full light but place near to a sunny window. Plant will go dormant depending on your indoor temperature. During that whole period it will not grow and needs much less watering (though keep lightly moist) . Leaves may attract little white flies only when indoors. Not to worry, they have no impact on the plants. Do not spray with any insecticide. You may spray a solution of water and ordinary soap without chemicals as you desire to dislodge and discourage these files

springPrepare for moving outdoors. Leaves may have attracted little white flies only when indoors. Not to worry, they have no impact on the plants.  Do not spray with any insecticide. You may spray a solution of water and ordinary soap without chemicals as you desire to dislodge and discourage these files. When the danger of frost is past move your plant to a shady area outside and lightly spray with water to clean dust and any other debris from leaves and stems. Gradually move to a more sunny area over five days. Smaller plants should be re-potted, in a pot twice the diameter, with good soil
